B3 Organisation – Vessel Relationship Types

1 Technical Manager
The company designated by the shipowner (or another responsible authority) to be specifically responsible for the technical operation and maintenance of a vessel.

2 Registered owner
The company considered to own the vessel in law. This is the company who are recorded as the owner on the vessel’s registration documentation.

3 Bareboat owner
This is a company that owns a vessel but has no business activity involving the vessels operation- they sell bareboat charters for the vessel (an arrangement for the chartering or hiring of a vessel whereby no crew or provisions are included as part of the agreement; instead, the company renting the vessel are responsible for taking care of such things).

4 Document of compliance holder
A company that has assumed responsibility for the technical operation of the vessel from the owner and, in doing so, has agreed to ensure the vessel meets all conditions imposed by the ISM who grant a document of compliance- indicating that the vessel is operated according to the ISM safety management system.

5 Group beneficial owner
The ultimate financial beneficiary from the ownership of a vessel. This is the parent company of the registered owner (which may be a dummy company to meet conditions of registration- for example; being a company registered in a flag state).

6 Operating company
A company responsible for the commercial decisions concerning the use and employment of a vessel. This is the direct beneficiary of the profits from the vessels operations.

7 Ship manager
The company responsible (as designated by the vessels owner) for the day to day commercial running of the vessel.

Unknown or the relationship does not match any of those defined.
