A list of values describing the types of operations (activities) a vessel can be conducting at any point in time.

  • 1 Loading

    The loading of a cargo onto a vessel (not from another vessel).

  • 2 Discharging

    The discharging (unloading) of a vessel- not onto another vessel.

  • 3 At anchor

    The vessel was floating in a particular place and was prevented from moving by its anchor.

  • 4 Ballasting

    The vessel was conducting ballasting operations (adding temporary material to provide the desired draught and stability).

  • 5 Bunkering

    The vessel was conducting bunkering operations (getting supplied with fuel).

  • 6 De-ballasting

    The vessel was conducting de-ballasting operations (removing temporary material that had provided the desired draught and stability).

  • 7 Idle

    The vessel is idle (inactive).

  • 8 Drydock

    The vessel is located in a drydock.

  • 9 In transit

    The vessel is travelling from one location to another.

  • 10 Repairs afloat

    The vessel is having repairs completed whilst afloat (this can be at sea or whilst in dock).

  • 11 River transit

    The vessel is travelling on a river.

  • 12 STS discharging

    The unloading of cargoes from the vessel onto another vessel (a ship to ship transfer).

  • 13 STS loading

    The loading of cargoes from another vessel onto the vessel (a ship to ship transfer).

  • 14 At sea

    The vessel is conducting an operation at sea.

  • 15 Cooling down

    Reducing the temperature of the tanks on the vessel.

  • 16 De-slopping

    Removal of oil and grease waste produced from the constant use of a vessel.

  • 17 Gassing up

    The chemical treatment of vessel tanks using gas to remove carbon dioxide and complete the drying of tanks.

  • 18 Being towed

    The vessel is being towed by another entity (not using the vessels own power).

  • 19 Alongside shore facility

    The vessel is at a facility alongside the shore.

  • 20 Dredging

    The vessel is being used to dredge a sea or river bed (clear the bed of mud weed and rubbish with a dredge).

  • 21 Fire fighting

    The vessel is responding to a fire (to provide aid).

  • 22 Fishing/ trawling

    The vessel is being used to capture fish.

  • 23 In attendance or assisting

    The vessel is assisting or aiding another entity.

  • 24 Manoeuvring with assistance

    The vessel is manoeuvring with the assistance of another entity (often a tug).

  • 25 Manoeuvring without assistance

    The vessel is manoeuvring without the assistance of another entity (using its own onboard facilities).

  • 26 On station

    The vessel is on a station (in an idle state).

  • 27 On voyage

    The vessel is on a voyage.

  • 28 Being pushed

    The vessel is being pushed by another entity (moving with the propulsion coming externally from the vessel).

  • 29 Towing

    The vessel is towing (pulling) another vessel.

  • 30 Diving

    The vessel is being used to enable divers to complete activities.

  • 31 Cargo transportation

    The vessel is being used to transport cargo from one location to another.

  • 32 Undefined

    The vessels operation is unknown or does not match any of the previous descriptions.
