A list of values describing the overarching function, operations and set up of a terminal.

B5 Terminal Types
  • 1 Dry/ inland

    An inland intermodal terminal directly connected by road or rail to a sea port and operating as a centre for the transhipment of sea cargo to inland destinations.

  • 2 Crude oil floating

    A floating buoy or jetty anchored offshore to allow handling of single point crude oil cargo.

  • 3 Sulphur and gas

    A terminal that only allows for the handling of sulphur and gas cargoes.

  • 4 Bulk

    A purpose-designed terminal for handling liquid or dry commodities in unpackaged bulk loads.

  • 5 Container

    A terminal where cargo containers are transhipped between different transport vehicles for onward transportation.

  • 6 LPG, LNG and

    A terminal that only allows for the handling of molten sulphur, LPG molten sulphur and LNG cargoes.

  • 7 Wharf

    A quayside area to which a vessel may be moored to load and unload.

  • 8 Gas only

    A structure to store and enable a vessel to unload gas cargoes- generally comprising of specialised tanks and pipelines.

  • 9 Chemical only

    A structure to store and enable a vessel to unload chemical cargoes- generally comprising of specialised tanks and pipelines.

  • 10 Oil only

    A structure to store and enable a vessel to unload oil cargoes- generally comprising of specialised tanks and pipelines.

  • 11 Refined products

    A structure to store and enable a vessel to unload refined product cargoes- generally comprising of specialised tanks and pipelines.

  • 12 Roll-on roll-off

    A terminal allowing the loading, unloading and storage of wheeled passenger cargo that also contains facilities for passenger boarding, disembarking and waiting. This is commonly referred to as a ROPAX terminal.

  • 13 Roll-on roll-off

    A terminal with the facilities to allow the loading, unloading and storage of wheeled cargo. This is commonly referred to as a RO- RO terminal.

  • 14 Dry bulk

    A purpose-designed terminal for handling dry (non-liquid or gas) commodities in unpackaged bulk loads.

  • 15 Monobuoys

    Also known as a single buoy mooring this is a loading buoy anchored offshore that serves as a mooring point and interconnect for tankers loading or offloading cargoes (generally liquid). These can usually facilitate vessels of any size.

  • 16 Ferry

    A structure within a port where ferries can pick up and drop off passengers. Note that this differs from a Roll on roll off passenger terminal as this cannot handle vehicles.

  • 17 Undefined

    A terminal of unknown type, or one which does not match any of the previous descriptions.
