B14: Incident Types

A list containing values that describe different types of incidents (considering the vessels involved, the cause of the incident, occurrences during the incident and any consequences of the incident).

B14 Incident Types
  • 1 Customer complaint

    A customer submitted a complaint about marine activities.

  • 2 Loss of propulsion

    The vessel suffered from a temporary or permanent loss of propulsion.

  • 3 Machinery failure- engine

    A machinery failure in the engine occurred.

  • 4 Collision

    An impact (crash or striking upon) with another moving entity occurred (this can be any other object).

  • 5 Cargo containment

    A failure occurred in the containment of a vessel’s cargo.

  • 6 Grounding

    The vessel ran aground.

  • 7 Environmental

    The vessel suffered from some form of external environmental factors.

  • 8 Navigation equipment failure

    The vessels navigational equipment failed either permanently or temporarily.

  • 9 Personal injury

    Injury occurred to an individual either on the vessel or due to the vessel.

  • 10 Piracy/ hijack

    The vessel suffered from a hijacking or some form of piracy.

  • 11 Blackout

    A blackout occurred on the vessel.

  • 12 Safety equipment failure

    Safety equipment failed on the vessel.

  • 13 Mooring breakout

    The vessel broke free of its mooring (in an unplanned manner).

  • 14 Contact damage/ allision

    An impact (crash or striking upon) with a stationary entity occurred.

  • 15 Structural

    The vessel suffered from a structural failure.

  • 16 Fire

    Either a fire occurred on the vessel or an external fire impacted the vessel.

  • 17 Terrorism

    The vessel suffered from some form of terrorist attack.

  • 18 Explosion

    An explosion occurred on the vessel.

  • 19 Port State Control detention

    The vessel was detained as a result of a port state control inspection.

  • 20 Criminal act

    The vessel suffered from or was involved in a criminal act.

  • 21 Man overboard

    An individual on the vessel fell overboard.

  • 22 Fatality

    A human fatality occurred.

  • 23 Loss of steering

    The vessel suffered from a temporary or permanent loss of steering (from its own facilities).

  • 24 Machinery failure- deck or cargo

    A machinery failure occurred on the vessel deck or on the cargo facilities.

  • 25 Stranded

    The vessel was left without the means to move from a location.

  • 26 War-loss or hostilities

    The vessel suffered damage in some form of conflict.

  • 27 Foundered

    The vessel filled with water in an unplanned manner.

  • 28 Undefined

    The incident type is unknown or does not match any of the previous descriptions.
